Mourdock’s Mea Culpa

Less than 24 hours after controversial remarks regarding abortion and rape set off a national firestorm, Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock went before the media to apologize.

During his debate with Democrat Joe Donnelly and Libertarian Andy Horning, Mourdock said that if a woman became pregnant due to rape it was God’s intent and he could not support abortion for that reason.

Those comments drew sharp criticism from Democrats and abandonment from all but the most diehard Republicans.

Mourdock said he was sorry if his words were misconstrued and that he was not condoning rape or any act of sexual violence. However, he reiterated his position that he believes in abortion when the life of the mother is in danger.

During the news conference Mourdock appeared to tear up at times.  You can hear his comments below.  The news conference runs approximately 15 minutes.
